As Lead Designer during my time at Monks, I directed the UX and UI strategy for Southwest Airlines’ Interactive Route Map. This initiative was designed to transform a complex data set into an intuitive, high-performance tool that empowers travelers to explore destinations and plan journeys with ease. By bridging the gap between inspirational travel discovery and the technical booking engine, I ensured the digital experience directly supported Southwest’s commitment to superior customer service and operational efficiency.

Challenge

Navigating a vast network of flight routes can often be a point of friction for customers. The goal was to modernise the way travelers interact with the airline’s destination data.

The Problem: Traditional flight search interfaces can feel transactional and restrictive, often failing to provide the visual context needed for effective trip planning.

The Goal: Develop a user-centric, interactive map that simplifies route discovery, improves the user experience and drives direct booking conversions.

    Insights

    To ensure the solution was grounded in both user needs and business objectives, I led a data-driven research phase:

    User & Market Research: Developed detailed user personas to understand the different mental models of travelers, from spontaneous explorers to schedule-driven business flyers.

    Performance Benchmarking: Analysed how users interact with mapping interfaces to identify common pain points in legacy airline tools.

    Stakeholder Alignment: Collaborated with Product and Marketing teams to ensure the map served as both a functional utility and a powerful lead-generation tool.

      Action

      I implemented a comprehensive design process that balanced aesthetic appeal with technical performance:

      End-to-End UX Design: Orchestrated the creation of wireframes and high-fidelity mockups that prioritised clarity and ease of use across all screen sizes.

      Iterative Usability Testing: Conducted rigorous testing sessions to validate navigation patterns, ensuring that the transition from “browsing the map” to “booking a flight” was frictionless.

      Technical Collaboration: Worked closely with the development team to ensure the seamless integration of real-time flight data, maintaining high performance and responsiveness without compromising the visual experience.

      UI Modernisation: Applied a clean, modern aesthetic that aligned with Southwest’s brand identity while utilizing technical literacy to optimise the map’s interactive elements.

        The interactive route map has become a vital component of the Southwest digital ecosystem, delivering measurable value:

        Increased Conversion: By simplifying the trip-planning process, the tool directly improved the path to purchase and boosted booking efficiency.
